The field of bioinformatics is revolutionizing biomedical research
by integrating mathematics, computer science, molecular biology,
and genetics. As a result, there is a burgeoning demand for scientists
trained in bioinformatics and prepared to drive discovery in
the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, colleges and
universities.
In collaboration with the Informatics Institute of UMDNJ, The
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) at UMDNJ has developed
new courses, research expertise and a program of study to answer
this need.
Upon graduation, GSBS and the Institute will recognize students
who complete both the Bioinformatics Core Curriculum and the
requirements of the student's graduate program with a Certificate
to document this achievement.
ELIGIBILITY: The Bioinformatics Concentration is offered to
students pursuing a graduate degree in the biomedical sciences
enrolled at UMDNJ-GSBS, or enrolled at Rutgers University pursuing
joint degrees from Rutgers University and UMDNJ-GSBS.
Completion of these certificate requirements may require an
extra year of graduate work.
ADMISSION: Students can seek acceptance to pursue a Concentration
in Bioinformatics through approval of both their graduate program
and the Bioinformatics Committee.
BIOINFORMATICS COURSES AND THE CORE CURRICULUM
The Core Curriculum may be tailored to the needs and experience
of specific students. For example, matriculated students who
have taken related courses should consult with the Coordinator
for the Bioinformatics Committee to determine their requirements.
CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS
M.S.
A Certificate documenting completion of the Concentration in Bioinformatics
will be awarded to students earning the M.S. degree from their graduate program
upon completion of 12 Credit Hours in consultation with the Program Supervisor.
Ph.D.
A Certificate documenting completion of the Concentration Bioinformatics will
be awarded to students earning the Ph.D. degree from their graduate program
upon successful completion of the entire Bioinformatics Core Curriculum including
appropriate Research and Electives for a total of 18 Credit Hours.
