Client Software

Enabling you computer to connect to our servers

There are four different means to connect to our servers and software. How you connect depends both on the nature of your needs and the capacity of the software.

You may need to install additional client software on your PC or Mac. Those clients talk to server software at the University. Client software includes:

  • Web browsers for your PC or Mac
    • None of the UMDNJ Bioinformatics software tools we now support require that you get a special account when web-enabled bioinformatics tools are accessed through a web browser
    • If you are using EMBOSS-Explorer, for sequence analysis you will only need a web browser.
    • Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer are examples of web browsers
  • Secure Telnet Clients for your PC: Secure Shell, SSH
    • What does it do?
      • Command line interactions with the Unix servers: Sunfire 6800 and the Linux Cluster
    • Where can I get it?
      • Download the most recent Secure Shell Client (SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.9.exe) from the ssh.org ftp site
    • How do I install it?
      • No special instructions seem necessary to install the product
    • How do I use it?
  • Secure File Transfer Protocol Clients for your PC : sFTP
    • What does it do?
      • Move files between your PC or Mac and the server
    • Where can I get it?
      • The client software is included with Secure Shell, downloaded from the link above.
    • How do I use it?
      • Having obtained the appropriate account, login to either the Sunfire or the Linux cluster using SSH
      • Click on the FTP icon on the SSH Secure Shell tool bar

        ftp icon

      • Files are moved between your PC/Mac and the server using standard drag-and-drop techniques.
  • Secure Shell and FTP for your Mac.
    • Mac OS X is shipped with open SSH
    • Individuals using earlier Mac operating systems might consult OpenSSH
  • Virtual Network Computer Clients
    • What does it do?
      • Gets a Graphical User Interface (GUI) image of a Unix workstation on your PC or Mac
    • Where can I get it?
      • PCs: Download and Install VNC from RealVNC.com
      • Macs: Download and Install VNC from one of the following two sources. We have less experience with these products and will appreciate your feedback:
    • How do I install it?
      • No special instructions seem necessary to install the product
      • When presented with the options to install both the VNC server and the VNC client on your PC/Mac, we suggest that you only install the client
    • How do I use it?
      • VNC is a very useful but more complex environment to work in. Please refer to a separate page with links to instructions.
