The Physical Library
The physical library remains an important tool in locating and retrieving resources,
whether in print or online.
- Not everything is on line. A library gives you access to print resources
not available electronically.
- If what you are looking for is not locally available, the library staff
will assist you with document
delivery and/or interlibrary loan.
- Librarians sleep, too. The library is open only for designated hours
- Most libraries have free computer and internet access
Meet your librarian!
- Librarians can assist you in improving your literature searches or otherwise
sharpening your skills.
- Librarians LOVE to search for and locate the information you need! This
claim is certified by BJ Swartz, your co-instructor for this unit.
- Librarians network with each other for resource sharing.
- Librarians will try non-traditional resources.
The Virtual Library
- Computers don't sleep (usually). The virtual library is accessible by
computer with Internet access 24/7
- Users have significant access to the literature. Here are up-to-date
lists of full-text electronic
books & journals at UMDNJ..
- Individuals can search via institutionally licensed or publicly available
resources. Databases are available through UMDNJ.
- Because you connect, you can have document delivery at your desktop
- When you need help, you can still get electronic response from a Librarian.
There is an Ask the Librarian feature in Newark, New Brunswick, and the Piscataway Media Library.
But...
- Not all journals and books are on the Internet or available electronically,
despite great expectations that Google or other companies will scan all books and make them available online..
- Some e-journal licenses prohibit interlibrary loans.
- Publishers and libraries are still feeling their way. Licensing is not standardized
and is often very expensive.
- Open access journals provide one avenue toward wide availability in a world of limited budgets. Peter Suber wrote a still compelling short article in the first edition of an early Open Access journal, The Journal of Biology
UMDNJ
Library services are available through the UMDNJ Libraries and the Rutgers
University Library of Science and Medicine. The libraries are open to the public,
with limited services available for unaffiliated patrons.
- After Hours
QandANJ
Live online reference service is provided 24 hours a day through this program
sponsored by the New Jersey Library Network.
- Email
Queries can be sent via email.
They will be answered by BJ
Swartz or forwarded
to someone at your campus who may be able to help you.
