Judy Cohn was named Associate Vice President for Scholarly Information /
University Librarian in Spring 2002. Previously, she served as Assistant
University Librarian and Director, George F. Smith Library of the Health
Sciences on the Newark Campus. She currently serves as a Co-Director of
the IAIMS Operational Phase grant, a five-year grant awarded to the University
by the National Library of Medicine in 2002.
Ms. Cohn's educational background include a BA degree from Rutgers
University, where her studies focused on Communications and Media. She received
an MLS degree
with a specialization in Media from the Rutgers University - School of Communication,
Information and Library Studies.
She also
completed the AAMC Management Education Program in Information Technology. She
served as a MLS Program Associate for six years, representing the educational
needs of health sciences librarians to the library graduate program.
Judy Cohn holds two faculty titles at UMDNJ. She is currently an Assistant
Professor of Preventive Medicine and Community Health at New Jersey Medical
School
and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health
at New Jersey Dental School. She also serves an adjunct faculty
instructor at the Rutgers University - School of Communication, Information and
Library Studies program.
With primary interest in library informatics, a major
priority has been the growth of electronic scholarly resources licensed
for the UMDNJ community. Over
the past five years, the University Libraries have licensed over 3000 full-text
electronic journals, over 170 electronic textbooks in the health sciences,
62 databases,
several image banks and a robust university-wide library program. Librarians
at all of UMDNJ campuses participate in teaching informatics skills in
the medical, dental, allied health, public health and graduate school programs. A
current emphasis is placed on teaching evidence-based searching skills
to students in the various UMDNJ schools.
Active in library professional associations, Judy Cohn was named New Jersey
Health Sciences Librarian of the Year 2004 by the Health Sciences Libraries
Association of New Jersey. She is the current Chair of the Executive Committee
of the Virtual Academic Library Environment (VALE) a statewide consortium
of all 52 of NJ’s academic libraries committed to inter-institutional
connectivity and collaborative library application projects. VALE’s
objective is to help institutions meet the demands of students and faculty
for access to scholarly
materials, through cooperation and leveraged purchasing, and through the
use of collaboration and cutting-edge technology,
Under her leadership, the statewide consumer health Web site, HealthyNJ was
planned and implemented. Currently consisting of five major portals, the
Web site has hundreds of Diseases & Conditions, and Health & Wellness
topics, with substantial content in both English and Spanish.
